Dr. Nusrat Mumtaz is a violinist and drummer from a family of talented artists born in Dhaka, Bangladesh. She pursued her studies in India, earning her Bachelors of Performing Arts, Masters of Performing Arts (First class gold medalist in entire faculty), and Doctor of Philosophy (Music) degrees from Maharaja Sayajirao University in Baroda, Gujarat. She then specialized in North Indian classical music (Hindustani). Under the mentorship of Sri Neelkanth Nahar Ghaneker, Nusrat learned the Gayaki Style (Vocal Style) of violin performance. They partnered together under the show name “Guru Shishsho Jugal Bandi” and did several concerts together through many places in India. 

Once acquiring her skills from her homeland, Nusrat moved to Canada, establishing her career as a Western and Eastern solo violinist and performer. She also explored fusion music and expanded her craft as a music composer, director, and producer, keen on blending traditional and contemporary elements. 

Spending decades as an educator, Nusrat brings the same passion to her lessons. She guides her students through the vast knowledge of what Eastern and Western classical music has to offer, while including the art of improvisation. Nusrat equips her students with music theory knowledge and a deep understanding of staff notation. 

Nusrat believes that being a musician is about expressing oneself and emphasizes the joy in performing. She encourages students to play along with backing tracks of their favorite songs, often sourced from online platforms. This approach helps students not only refine their musicianship but also enjoy the feeling of a live performance.

Through her teaching, Nusrat fosters an inclusive, inspiring space where students of all levels can connect with the universal language of music and discover their creativity through the art of blending different styles and genres.
